One more story: how BellaBye began

It began with a little girl called Bella asking for one more story. This is how BellaBye started.

BellaBye began at the end of a long day, with our daughter, Bella, asking for one more story, and two tired parents trying to think of a new one. If you’ve ever sat on the edge of a bed with nothing left in the tank and a small voice saying “just one more”, you’ll know exactly how that felt.

A big family, and a long day

We’re parents of a big, busy family, with more cousins than we can count. So bedtime often means more than one child, each wanting their own story.

Some nights they want an old favourite, told exactly the same way. Other nights they want something brand new, starring themselves, the dog and possibly a dragon. At the end of a long day, thinking up something new, again and again, is harder than it sounds.

“We wanted to make bedtime a little easier for parents, and a lot more magical for children.”

A bedside table at the end of a long day: a low lamp, a stack of picture books, a notebook headed “A new one?” with half-finished ideas, and a sleepy owl peeking over the books.
Every parent knows the page that says “a new one?”

What we wanted it to be

We started with the things that matter to us at bedtime, and they shaped everything that followed.

Never instead of books. We love books. We read them every night, and we always will. BellaBye isn’t here to replace them; it’s here to add to them. That’s why every picture story we make can become a picture book, ready to print, hold and read together.
Faraway voices, brought home. Not everyone we love lives around the corner. Grandparents in another country. An uncle across the ocean. A parent away for work. We wanted the people our children miss to be part of bedtime too, so their voice can read tonight’s story, wherever they are.
Stories all about them.No two children are the same, so no two stories should be either. You tell us about your child once, and every story is made around them, and grows with them, from age 2 to 12.
A story for what tonight needs.A trip to the dentist tomorrow. A first time on stage. Missing someone who lives far away. Stories have always helped children through big moments, and a gentle one with your child as the hero can help them feel braver, and a little less alone.
A happy thought to fall asleep on.Most stories are told just before sleep, so ours are made to help. They grow calmer as they go, can end on a sleepy note, and leave your child with a kind, happy thought to drift off to.
Stories that ask questions back.Questions after the story to talk about together, points for listening and answering, and a toy collection to grow, all to help little listeners stay curious and attentive.
Every story made your way.Every family’s bedtime is different, so you choose how each story is made: the picture style, the colours, the kind of tale, a gentle lesson, how funny it is, and who joins in.

Where we hope it fits

Our goal is simple: the world’s best storytelling for children. Not to replace the books on the shelf, or the cuddles at bedtime, but to add a little more magic to them, in the voices your child loves. BellaBye works on any phone, tablet or computer, wherever you are in the world.

If BellaBye helps your family end the day together, on a happy thought, then we’ve done what we set out to do. Because the best way to end a day is together.
